Nevis, St. Kitts, Right out of my book.

Yesterday, I walked in Basseterre until my feet glowed in my flip-flops. There just happened to be a parade that was really cool. Young kids, the school band, and the big drums resounding off of the old buildings. It’s a little different here… everyone I have encountered is honest, and happy. It took some getting used to. I have been using both american money and the EC dollar. I run the calculations in my head as I receive change in EC. Often in the past on other islands I have been cheated on the exchange. Here, they point out my mistakes to keep me from shorting myself. The sidewalks are tight and uneven. Often people, very nicely dressed, step to the side and wait their turn to pass. You quickly find yourself returning the gesture.

I wanted to rent a car to explore, but now I am very happy I held back and called a taxi. It cost me $12.00 US into town, and after I watched my driver clear by inches on each side of his van, and NO parking available, I knew I had made the right decision. I haven’t seen any traffic lights here, and round-a-bouts are the norm.

This island is another example of (Now you see it-now you don’t). Right now, it is still in the, Island as I like them, mode. It is changing fast though. Condos, luxury homes, more luxurious shopping, and all of the electronic invasions of our privacy that we enjoy in the US. If you ever plan to come here, do it soon.

I have three new books that go to the editor soon. The main character, Louis, has discovered how to extend his life, in perfect health. He often escapes to his secret home on Nevis in all three books. I decided that I better verify my facts before the editor slices it to pieces. In the books, Louis meets an old island man that he plays chess with in the city square. It was up the street from the police station. In book three, Louis returns to the square to discover Charles has died of old age, while Louis now one-hundred-forty-five still looks thirty-four. Throughout the books, he learns that living an extended life is not the fantasy that we assume it to be.

I stepped off of the ferry and walked onto the pages of my book. I was looking for the square and after failing, inquired of a security man at a nearby bank. I told him I was an author, and a little bit about the book.

“Yes Sir! Follow this street past the police station on the left, and the park will be ahead on the right. You can not miss it. They are setting up Christmas decorations. AND… Sir! There used to be a man there that played chess and had never been beaten… but his name was not Charles.”

As I walked I felt light headed. It was like my pages had come to life.

This is a new writing style for me and I hope you enjoy them. At this point, they are called Longue’ Duree (Extended Life) I, II, and III. (I’m playing with IV)

I took several photos of the rest of our adventure. Somehow I was panicking that I was losing such a free-thinking lover. I had never been with anyone quite like her. We took photos of us together and images of me being happy. It would be hard to sell them to Riki as depressed.
Berlin was also slowing down. I suspected she would miss me too. She spent the first day along the Keys, lying in the sun and watching the bridges and mangrove trees pass from a distance. She slept with her head on my lap during the night watch, and I kept my hand on her thigh when I slept.
In the morning, she came to me at the helm and told me it was time for one last game. “It’s called Not Yet! We can do anything we want to each other, and the other cannot deny any act you wish to impose. The only rule is that no one can climax until nine o’clock tonight.  Erotic romance adventure with a touch of Sci-fi.

We sailed back out to blue water and started the long trip back to the Keys. We sailed nonstop for days while the wind and seas were accommodating. On the third day, the skies stayed cloudy, and the wind speed increased. That evening it started raining… sideways!
The visibility dropped to a couple hundred yards. I was glad I had the chart plotter and radar. We hunted for an island to hide out on for a while. I searched the charts, and we were in the middle of nowhere. We were northwest of Puerto Rico and northeast of the Dominican Republic. From the depth meter reading of fourteen thousand feet, I confirmed we were over the Maimon Basin. We were getting tired, and it was too rough to sleep on night watch changes. The whitecaps were splashing across the deck. The water was cold, and we broke out our heavy weather gear.
I already had the main sail reduced into the mast as we still did seven knots across the big rolling waves. We were considering going back to Puerto Rico when the radio started screaming, “Mayday! Mayday! We are taking on water. Mayday! Mayday!”

I sat and spun my spinel ring around on my finger, wondering if I had been played. It didn’t make sense. Too many things looked like she wanted a future with me. I opened the fridge, got out another beer, and sat on my front porch.
“Hey, Louis, you crazy man! How ya do’n?” said my shirt shop neighbor.
“Ahhh, little bit lonely. A little bit confused,” I said.
“What? That Russian girl?”
“Yeah, but she’s Ukrainian,” I corrected.
“She’s definitely hot! I saw her getting on a private jet up at the airport the other day.”
“Oh yeah?” I said.
“Yeah! She was the only passenger, and they left as soon as she boarded. The passport dude even came to the plane and stamped her passport at the bottom of the steps. Man, you know how to pick them. Beautiful and richer’n hell too. Hey man, I gotta go close up the shop! Take it easy!” He ran back across the street.

Pushing me from behind the table, she led me into the master cabin and instructed me to get on the bed. I looked into her eyes and waited. She hung her gown on the door and unzipped my shorts. I removed my clothes and scooted across the bed. She kissed me and laid her head on the pillow beside me.
“So, what are your boundaries?” she asked softly.
“Are you on birth control?”
“Yes.”
“Then there are no boundaries!”

What about Jenny? Writer’s dream too.

Stitched Panorama

Camping in the mountains. A small tent and a bear. A writer dreams.

What about Jenny?

It was dark and cold. The wind howled through the trees as the fabric of the tent fluttered and popped. I was alone and knew that Jenny was also alone in her tent not 100 feet away. I couldn’t sleep. Too much danger. Too much… alone.

I slid back into my sleeping bag and felt my body heat start to generate warmth against the loosely quilted goose down. I was glad now that I had brought the roll of foil bubble wrap and flattened it under the sleeping bag. I relaxed onto my side with my back toward the nylon.

I felt something pushing against my shoulder. It bumped against me over and over. I slowly pulled my hand from the sleeping bag and pushed against the nylon tent.

IT PUSHED BACK… AGAINST MY HAND! SHIT! I jumped back and watched it push into the side of the tent.  I hit it with the open palm of my hand. I heard scuffling outside… and then just the sound of the fluttering tent.

I pulled the sleeping bag up to my neck. The warmth felt good, in fact, there was sweat on my forehead. I dared not close my eyes as I continued staring at the side of the tent for the next attack. A bear? Yes a bear. They have been seen in these mountains. What of Jenny? The bear could have taken her? With the sounds of the tent and the wind, I may not have even heard her scream?

I crawled from the sleeping bag, toward the zippered door. A sudden strong gust blew the side of the tent against me. I pushed my hands against the side to keep it from tearing the stakes from the ground.

IT PUSHED AGAINST MY HAND! I pounded against it with my fist! IT PUSHED BACK OVER AND OVER! As I changed hands it bumped the other. Once I hit its teeth with my knuckle. Then it went away.

I sat and waited listening for sounds of movement outside. Only the wind… and the fluttering of the tent. I was shaking, partially from the freezing cold… and maybe the thought of becoming a bears snack. I slowly reached across and found the tab of the door zipper in the darkness. I had to know what was out there, and if Jenny’s tent was still standing. I slowly slid it up about six inches.  . ZZZzzzzzzzzzzzz!

A black nose and white teeth squeezed through the tiny opening.

“AAAAaahhh!” I jumped against the back of the tent almost taking it down. The head raised quickly as the zipper continued to open. A large German Shepherd lept across the tent and laid on my sleeping bag. It wagged its tail as if asking to stay. After I caught my breath, I pulled the zipper back down, and focused the battery lamp on the dog. It laid its head down and looked up at me as if showing submission.

“You’ll have to sleep at the bottom! Move over!” I climbed back into the sleeping bag and rested my hand on the big dog. At various times through the night, she licked my hand.

In the morning I made instant oats on my small alcohol burner, and shared dried beef with the dog in the warmth of the tent. I packed everything into my back pack and went outside to drop the tent. It had snowed last night after I went to sleep, and the mountain was silent in an odd sort of way. As I walked down the mountain the dog stayed right behind me. The only sounds were the crunching of the snow, an occasional snap of a stick, and the heavy breathing of the dog.

We got down the mountain to where we were seeing green again and the snow had turned to mud and weeds. We stopped to rest on a fallen tree, and again shared my dried beef. She watched my facial expressions as she wagged her tail.

But what about Jenny?

I had this dream and went quickly to my keyboard before I forgot it. It was three-o-clock in the morning. The majority of my published and future books start as a dream.

The Glow is an erotic romance novel with a shot of Sci-fi gracefully thrown in.

Louis Amhurst was a talented artist that lived in Key West. He lived on a sailboat and sailed between Key West and the Bahamas regularly. He sold just enough art to keep himself in food, fuel, and beer, and was content with his life.

One time, on a solo journey, exhausted Louis discovered a small island that was not on the charts. There was a salt pond on this island that was occupied by a water based entity. She had a strong influence on Louis and he keeps returning to her.

Once, while in the Bahamas, Louis met Riki, from Ukraine while swimming. Her family was wealthy and in political exile. They fell in love and planned to be married, until Louis met her maid of honor Berlin.

Berlin was a paralegal from Germany, and Riki’s best friend. She was wild, and creative, and had no restrictions. Again, he was in love.

But what about the jealous alien?

Once away from shore, I kicked on the chart plotter and located the salt pond. I locked my manual autopilot onto the course and checked it for the first half hour against the chart plotter. With everything in order, I turned off all the electronics except the running lights and the VHF. My batteries were old, and I used them conservatively.

I had an old radar detector from the eighties that chirped like crazy if it got hit by any ship radar for several miles. I got it from someone’s trash for free. I plugged it into the twelve-volt outlet.

I brought a pillow and blanket from below deck and put on my vest and tether. I wrapped the blanket around my body and lay down on the cockpit cushions. I dropped my face into the big feather pillow, and I could still smell Riki’s perfume.

“I’ll be so happy when my memory fades,” I said to the sailboat.
